Uruguay integrates into Group D, with Costa Rica, England and Italy. The group has been labeled as the “Group of Death”, three of its members are world champions. Being seeded, Uruguay was hoping to avoid having to face two European teams in the group stage. However, it can be argued the World Cup draw is well balanced, with the exception of Group F.
The defending champions of America will play against three known rivals. One of them is Costa Rica, who will debut on June 14 in Fortaleza. Uruguay eliminated Costa Rica in the play-offs for the World Cup in South Africa 2010
The second game of the Celeste is on June 19 against England at San Pablo. This is a tough opponent and there are expectations of controversy at the hands of Suarez. The leading goal-scorer in the Premier League, will be looking to make the headlines for his skills rather than controversial behaviour.
These teams have met in two previous World Cups. The first was in Basel for the Swiss Cup in 1954 when Uruguay were the defending champion from 1950. Uruguay defeated England 4-2. The second time was in London in the 1966 edition, when the match for the group stage ended goalless.
Finally, the group stage will come to end against Italy, the match will be on June 24 in Natal, under the intense midday heat. History marks two encounters in the World Cup. A goalless tie in Mexico in 1970 and in 1990 at Italy, the locals eliminated Uruguay in the round of 16 which at the time Uruguay was also managed by Oscar Washington Tabarez.
