About Zenit

Football Club Zenit Saint Petersburg was founded in 1925 as a result of a merger between several former teams from the area, including Murzinka and Bolshevik. The name FC Zenit was registered in 1936. The club achieved a small amount of success in the Soviet era before emerging as one of Russia's biggest clubs in the 21st century.

At the end of 2005, the natural gas company Gazprom purchased a controlling stake in Zenit. The company subsequently bought most of the club's shares and made a huge investment, purchasing new additions for the playing squad and putting plans in motion to build a new stadium for the club. The takeover helped to turn Zenit into a major force in both Russian and European football.

Zenit have achieved notable success both domestically and in continental competitions. In 1944, the club lifted the Soviet Cup after beating CSKA Moskva 2-1 in the final. In 1984, Zenit became Soviet champions for the first and only time. After the fall of the Soviet Union and the establishment of the Russian Premier League, the club achieved new levels of success. They lifted the Russian Cup in 1999 and then went on to win the league title in 2007, 2010 and 2012. In 2008, Zenit achieved major continental success for the first time. They lifted the UEFA Cup, beating Rangers in the final, then went on to win the UEFA Super Cup, this time overcoming Manchester United.

Some of the more notable players to play for Zenit over the years include names like Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, Andrei Arshavin, Bruno Alves and Hulk.

Zenit currently play home matches at the Petrovsky Stadium, which is part of the Petrovsky sports complex. The stadium has a capacity of 21,405. The club is in the process of constructing a new home ground, the Gazprom Arena, which is due to open in 2015. The stadium is expected to have a capacity of 69,000.
