“La Celeste” today will have another tough test against Ecuador in Quito at the Atahualpa Stadium.
A victory would put Uruguay a step closer of achieving direct classification for the world cup, if Colombia defeat Chile as well.
Yesterday, Uruguay head coach, Oscar Washington Tabarez refused to reveal the starting lineup at a press conference since he did “not have sufficient information on Ecuador starting lineup”. Tabarez went on to say he “would wait a few more hours until he made any confirmations.” Nothing been confirmed since then.
Despite Tabarez not confirming the starting eleven, based on training sessions it is expected to be as follows, Fernando Muslera, Diego Lugano, Jose Maria Gimenez, Diego Godin, Maximiliano Pereira, Jorge Fucile, Walter Gargano, Egidio Arevalo Rios, Cristian Rodriguez, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.
As for Ecuador, like Tabarez said “little is known about what the starting lineup might be" but it is expected to be as follows, Alexander Dominguez, Juan Carlos Paredes, Jorge Guagua, Frickson Erazo, Walter Ayovi, Antonio Valencia, Segundo Castillo, Christian Noboa, Jefferson Montero, Felipe Caicedo and Jaime Ayovi.
The Ecuadorian team is in fourth place with six wins, four draws and a lost, while Uruguay are located in the playoff position with the same results.
Note that sixteen previous fixtures between Ecuador and Uruguay for qualifiers, Uruguay has won ten of those matches, lost one and drew five.
October 10, 2009 Uruguay played Ecuador in the same stadium and needed the win to make it to South Africa. Uruguay defeated Ecuador 2-1, when Cavani was fouled in the penalty area.
In qualifying to Brazil, Ecuador has been undefeated at Atahualpa Stadium. Only equalizing one match against Argentina.
