About Sevilla

Sevilla Fútbol Club was formed in 1905 by a combination of Spaniards and British ex-pats. For many years, the club mainly played charity matches. Upon the creation of the national league system in Spain, Sevilla were assigned to the second tier and eventually gained promotion to the top flight in 1934.

The club's first period of success came in the 1930s-40s. In 1935, Sevilla beat Sabadell 3-0 to win the Copa del Rey. A second Copa del Rey followed in 1939 before Sevilla became champions of Spain in the 1945–46 season, beating Barcelona to the title by a single point. A third Copa del Rey win in 1947–48 brought this period of success to a close.

Over fifty years later, another period of success began in the 21st century. After spending some significant time in the Segunda División in the 1990s, Sevilla gained promotion at the end of the 2000–01 season. Under the management of Juande Ramos, the club reached new heights, winning the UEFA Cup in 2005-06, beating Middlesbrough 4-0 in the final. The resulting UEFA Super Cup match between Sevilla and European Champions Barcelona was also won by Ramos' men. The following season, the club won another Copa del Rey and successfully defended their UEFA Cup, beating Espanyol in the final and becoming the first club to win back-to-back UEFA Cups since Real Madrid in the 1980s. A fifth Copa del Rey win in 2009–10 ushered in the new decade in style.

Over the years, Sevilla has played host to some great footballing talents, including Frédéric Kanouté, the club's highest scoring foreign player; Luís Fabiano, who spent six seasons at the club, winning two UEFA Cups and two Copa del Reys; Jesús Navas, a Spanish international who came through the club's youth team and Dani Alves, who also spent six seasons at the club before moving to Barcelona.

Sevilla play home matches at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, a 45,500 seater stadium built in 1957. The ground is noteable for the fact that the Spanish national team has never lost an international match played at the stadium.
