Jeremie Frimpong's Liverpool US Tour Offers a Fresh Start

A difficult first season

Frimpong arrived with a reputation built on explosive acceleration, attacking instinct and the ability to stretch defences from wide areas. Those qualities were difficult to display consistently, however, as the report says a series of muscle problems interrupted his campaign.

The bigger issue was tactical. He was often used away from his most natural role, leaving questions over whether he is best deployed as an aggressive full-back, a wing-back or a more advanced right-sided attacker.

Glen Johnson has reportedly questioned whether Frimpong has yet made a convincing case in either defensive or attacking role. That judgment may be harsh after an injury-disrupted season, but it reflects the challenge facing the 24-year-old.

Iraola could offer a fresh start

A new coach brings a different set of demands. Andoni Iraola is expected to encourage a more aggressive style, one that could suit Frimpong’s pace, close control and ability to recover ground quickly.

Jaap Stam has reportedly urged patience, pointing to the demands of the Premier League and the pressure attached to playing for Liverpool. He has also highlighted Frimpong’s attacking quality while acknowledging that his defensive reading still requires refinement.

That balance will be central to Frimpong’s future. He does not necessarily need to become a conventional full-back, but he must give Liverpool greater clarity about where he can be trusted.

The tour becomes an audition

Missing the Netherlands’ tournament is disappointing, yet it should leave Frimpong with a full pre-season to rebuild rhythm and confidence. The United States tour could provide valuable minutes without the immediate pressure of competitive fixtures.

Liverpool’s next season may therefore begin with a simple question: can Frimpong stay fit long enough to turn potential into reliability? His performances under Iraola will offer the first meaningful answer.
