Self Esteem explains her Scotland and England World Cup loyalties

A family connection to Scotland

Taylor is due to perform during England’s meeting with Croatia, but she has chosen to support Scotland because of her Scottish great-grandfather. She has said she will still follow England’s opener on her phone, insisting that both teams will have her backing.

That position marks a shift from her connection with England’s women’s side. In 2023, Taylor joined Melanie C, Olivia Dean and Ellie Rowsell in Hope FC, the group behind the World Cup song *Call Me A Lioness*.

Her Scottish ties also run through football history. Taylor has previously spoken about her great-grandfather playing for Sheffield Wednesday in the 1920s - a natural link to the club she supports.

Arc offers a different kind of stage

The singer’s comments come as she prepares to headline Arc’s launch concerts at Kensington Olympia on 16 and 17 June. She has described the new venue and wider Olympia complex as a rare luxury for a touring musician, particularly after years spent performing in what she called “unclean, horrible venues”.

The shows form part of a wider run supporting her 2025 album *A Complicated Woman*. Taylor has also recently appeared in the West End production *Teeth ’N’ Smiles* and played Sally Bowles in *Cabaret*.

A break after a demanding run

After her summer dates, Taylor plans to step back from music before beginning another album. She has said she wants to reconnect with everyday life after reaching many of the goals she set herself.

For now, her attention remains split between the stage and the tournament. Scotland have already started with a 1-0 victory over Haiti, while Taylor’s next major moment arrives when Arc opens its doors. Her current tour ends at Forwards festival in Bristol on 29 August.
