Matthäus believes El Mala offers qualities Germany cannot afford to overlook: speed, bravery in possession and the willingness to attack defenders directly. Those traits could fit a Klopp side expected to place greater emphasis on wide players and quick transitions.
The forward’s senior pathway has reportedly been complicated. He received a first call-up under Julian Nagelsmann but has yet to make his Germany debut, while his omission from the World Cup squad drew attention.
On that decision, Matthäus reportedly said: “Maybe he didn't take him because there would have been too much fuss around him. But that's exactly what we need.”
International football demands more than flashes of potential. El Mala must establish consistency at club level, particularly after an eventful start to the season reportedly included illness and a knock.
Cologne manager Rene Wagner has indicated that the player understands the task: perform regularly, stay fit and make selection increasingly difficult to ignore. Interest from abroad has also reportedly followed, but El Mala’s decision to remain with Cologne gives him an important platform to develop without rushing the next step.
For Klopp, the attraction is clear. Germany have often searched for players capable of changing the rhythm of a match, and El Mala’s directness could offer a different option against deep defences.
Reports say Germany are due to begin Klopp’s tenure away to the Netherlands on 24 September, followed by fixtures against Greece and Serbia. Thursday’s squad announcement will reveal whether Matthäus’ call has been heard.
If El Mala misses out, the argument will not disappear. A strong run for Cologne could make his inclusion the next unavoidable question.
