Selangor Commits RM500,000 to Expand Under-15 Cup

A bigger tournament for schools

The report says RM500,000 has been committed to the expanded competition, which will involve 48 teams from across Selangor. That is a significant increase from the previous 32-team format and will take the tournament into all 12 districts.

The 2026 Sultan Selangor’s Silver Jubilee Cup Football Championship is scheduled to begin on 22 September 2026 and conclude on 31 October at Petaling Jaya City Council Stadium.

Each participating school is expected to receive RM1,200, with a further RM1,000 available for every round reached up to the semi-finals. The winners are due to receive RM12,000, while the runners-up will collect RM9,000.

A temporary name, a lasting opportunity

The rebranding is reportedly designed specifically for the Silver Jubilee and is expected to last only one year before the tournament returns as the Datuk Mokhtar Dahari Cup.

That temporary identity should not overshadow the wider opportunity. At under-15 level, regular competitive football can be crucial in identifying players before they reach elite academy age. A carnival-style format, described as being modelled on the World Cup, could also bring more attention to schools that rarely receive a major platform.

The report says state officials want closer cooperation between the organisers, the Football Association of Selangor and sports bodies. That will be important: prize money can launch a tournament, but proper player monitoring, coaching, facilities and welfare are what build a pathway.

The first test comes when the opening matches begin in September. The key storyline will be whether this expanded celebration becomes more than a one-off event-and whether its most promising players remain visible after the tournament returns to the Datuk Mokhtar Dahari Cup name.
