Como’s attraction is clear: Chalobah offers experience, versatility and the ability to operate across a back three or back four. At 25, he would also fit the profile of a player capable of growing with an ambitious project.
The obstacle is Chelsea’s asking price. Romano described the move as “a dream for Como”, with the clubs currently far apart on valuation. That gap means the Italian side may need Chelsea to soften their position, or Chalobah to push strongly for a change of scenery.
Chalobah’s reported openness to Serie A is significant. He has been linked with interest from Italy before, including discussions involving Inter, and a move to Como could offer the consistent starting role that has not always been guaranteed at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea, however, are understood to prefer retaining a defender who came through their academy and still has two years left on his contract. His ability to cover multiple defensive positions gives the club useful depth, particularly during a demanding campaign.
Under Xabi Alonso, Chalobah is expected to compete with Levi Colwill, Jorrel Hato and Josh Acheampong for regular minutes. That competition could either convince Chelsea that they need him or strengthen the case for a transfer if playing time appears limited.
Romano’s assessment is cautious: “Today, we are talking about it as a desire.” The next stage of the window will reveal whether that desire becomes a serious proposal, or whether Chalobah remains part of Chelsea’s plans.
