Malagò’s reported election follows Gabriele Gravina’s resignation and gives the federation a new political direction, but little room for delay. Italy’s World Cup absence has made the coaching decision more than a routine appointment.
The report says Malagò’s first major test will be convincing supporters that the federation has a credible plan. That plan must address repeated qualification failures, not simply provide a short-term lift before the next international window.
Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte are reportedly the leading candidates, but they represent different solutions.
Mancini would bring proven success with the national team after guiding Italy to the European Championship title in 2021. His previous cycle also ended with Italy missing the following World Cup, leaving questions about whether his second spell would be a restoration or a repeat.
Conte offers a more confrontational rebuild. He led Italy at Euro 2016 and has built his reputation on tactical clarity, demanding standards and immediate competitive improvement. His recent departure from Napoli could make the timing possible, although a return to international management would require a clear commitment to a longer project.
Italy’s issue is not only the identity of the coach. Three consecutive World Cup absences point to weaknesses in squad development, attacking production and tournament preparation. The new manager will need authority over selection while creating a team capable of handling qualification pressure.
Malagò’s first decision will therefore establish the tone of his presidency. The next squad announcement and qualification campaign will reveal whether Italy has chosen a genuine reset-or simply another familiar name to manage the same cycle.
