Clearlake Capital Reportedly Takes Full Control of Chelsea

A change at the top

Boehly became the public face of Chelsea’s ownership group after the consortium’s purchase of the club in 2022. His tenure was defined by aggressive recruitment, major investment and a willingness to reshape the club’s sporting structure - an approach that divided opinion among supporters.

The report does not clarify why Boehly and Walter decided to sell. That uncertainty will inevitably fuel debate, particularly around the balance of power within an ownership group that has operated under intense scrutiny since taking over at Stamford Bridge.

Boehly’s message

Boehly’s statement struck a conciliatory tone. He thanked the Premier League, coaches, players, executives, staff and supporters, saying: “Gostaria de agradecer aos muitos que ajudaram a garantir um futuro brilhante para o clube, incluindo a Premier League, os treinadores e jogadores, a talentosa liderança e a equipe do Chelsea, e as legiões de torcedores dedicados”.

He also praised his partnership with Clearlake and expressed confidence in what comes next. “Estou confiante de que o Chelsea está bem posicionado para seguir tendo sucesso sob a liderança da Clearlake”, Boehly concluded.

That wording points to a smooth handover rather than an openly hostile split. Yet full control would still represent a significant shift in Chelsea’s leadership and public identity.

What changes for Chelsea?

Clearlake will face immediate pressure to show that ownership unity can produce sporting stability. Chelsea’s long-term strategy, manager decisions and transfer policy will now be judged under a clearer chain of authority.

The next transfer window will offer the first major test of the new structure. Whether Clearlake maintains the club’s ambitious model or adopts a more measured approach could define the next chapter at Stamford Bridge.
