Diego Forlan Appointed Uruguay Coach Until March 2027

Forlan gets a short runway

The report says Ignacio Alonso, president of the Uruguayan Football Association, confirmed Forlan’s appointment and presented it as a decision rooted in a longer-term relationship.

“The AUF Executive Committee chose Diego,” Alonso said. “We met with him back in 2022 to bring him into the project. He is now very enthusiastic.”

That framing matters. Forlan is reportedly not simply an emergency replacement for Bielsa, but the federation’s preferred candidate after a difficult tournament. However, the arrangement appears deliberately cautious, with Uruguay expected to review the position after March 2027.

His first senior fixtures are expected to arrive between September and November, giving him limited time to establish his methods and reshape a squad that needs renewed direction.

More than a famous name

Forlan’s authority comes naturally from his playing career, including his time at Manchester United and his status as one of Uruguay’s most recognisable modern footballers.

But international management will demand more than dressing-room respect. Uruguay need a clear identity, a settled midfield and a response to the disappointment of exiting the World Cup at the group stage. Forlan’s challenge will be balancing national expectation with the patience required to build a new cycle.

Ugarte complicates United’s plans

The update also says Ugarte suffered a serious injury and could face a lengthy recovery. If that assessment proves accurate, Manchester United’s reported intention to sell the midfielder this summer would be difficult to pursue.

The club may now have to reassess its midfield options, squad depth and transfer priorities while Ugarte begins his rehabilitation.

Forlan’s first international window will be the next major test, while Ugarte’s recovery could shape Manchester United’s transfer strategy well beyond the summer.
