Italy's Dual-National Recruitment Drive and Tresoldi's Choice

Italy widens the net

The report says Roberto Mancini has called up Alessandro Romano, Issa Doumbia, Eddy Kouadio and Mohamed Ali Zoma as Italy looks to strengthen its connection with a broader pool of talent.

Romano’s case is especially notable. Having previously represented Switzerland, he is reportedly receiving his first Italy call-up. A senior opportunity can dramatically alter a player’s international options, even when it does not immediately settle every question about his long-term allegiance.

Italy’s search for eligible talent is not new. Mateo Retegui, born in Argentina with Italian roots, became an example of how the federation has looked beyond players developed entirely within the domestic system.

Tresoldi refuses to rush

The more delicate situation involves Nicolò Tresoldi. The Club Brugge striker was reportedly approached by Mancini but has chosen to delay his senior decision.

Tresoldi was born in Italy, has lived in Germany since 2014 and is part of the Germany Under-21 setup. The report says he wants to pursue the 2027 European Under-21 Championship before choosing between Italy and Germany.

That patience is understandable. A senior international career can shape a player’s identity as much as his sporting path, and Klopp’s quoted comments indicate that Germany intends to avoid turning the decision into a public tug-of-war.

A wider European contest

The same challenge faces France, Germany and Switzerland, all of which have built national-team depth by embracing players with multiple cultural, family or sporting connections.

For federations, the competition begins long before a senior debut. Relationships with families, youth coaches and dual-eligible players can influence decisions years before a major tournament.

Italy’s next squad announcement will reveal whether this recruitment drive becomes a sustained strategy. For Tresoldi, the next stage of his Under-21 journey may be the clearest clue yet to which national shirt he ultimately chooses.
