Toronto FC II Plan Barrie Home for 2028-2029 MLS NEXT Pro

A new stage for development

Toronto FC II already occupy the final step between the club’s academy system and senior football. A Barrie base would give that pathway a distinct identity and place its young players in a dedicated professional environment.

The report says the City of Barrie, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, MLS NEXT Pro and Barrie Stadium Group are working together on the project. The planned venue would hold 3,500 spectators, with construction proposed for the former Barrie Central Collegiate site.

Chris Shewfelt, MLSE’s vice-president of business operations and lead governor of Toronto FC II, described Barrie as showing “tremendous ambition” and “a clear vision for the future”.

A stadium beyond matchday

The venue’s success will not be judged solely by attendances. Plans call for a multi-use facility hosting concerts, festivals, other sporting events and community programming alongside football.

That broader purpose matters. A development side needs a strong football environment, but a new stadium also needs to become part of the city’s weekly rhythm. Barrie Stadium Group chairman Jamie Massie said the project could become part of the city’s identity “for generations to come”.

For MLS NEXT Pro, Barrie also fits a wider expansion ambition: placing professional development football in communities with the infrastructure and appetite to support it.

The long road ahead

The project remains in its planning phase, and several details-including the club’s long-term identity and final stadium plans-still need to be settled. The lengthy runway to the expected launch gives all parties time to ensure the venue works for players, supporters and the wider community.

The next storyline will be whether Barrie can turn an ambitious announcement into a functioning football home before Toronto FC II’s first competitive season.
