Walmart and LaLiga Turn East Brunswick Store Into Fan Attraction

From supermarket to fan itinerary

The event used a familiar American retail setting to introduce visiting football supporters to everyday products and habits. The reported tour included paper passports, VIP lanyards and giveaways, creating a structured experience from a routine store visit.

  • About 30 miles separated the store from MetLife Stadium.
  • Giveaway bags were reportedly worth about $35.
  • The route featured ranch dressing, peanut butter, ground beef, jerseys and bananas.
  • Walmart reportedly says it sells 4.46 billion bananas annually in the United States.

That detail matters because the attraction was not built around football merchandise alone. It presented the supermarket itself as part of the tournament experience.

Football culture meets American retail

The report says the idea followed online attention from international supporters, including Australian fans who turned a Walmart visit into a chant-filled stop on their trip. Other American destinations, such as Waffle House, Buc-ee’s and Bass Pro Shops, have also become informal landmarks for football travellers.

The reported programme added recognisable football figures to the retail setting, with scheduled appearances from former stars Carles Puyol and Radamel Falcao. Lamine Yamal was also said to have visited Walmart during the tournament, further connecting the store to the football itinerary.

The concept had limits. The report says organisers expected international guests, but those attending were based in the United States. Rain also forced the player meet-and-greet indoors, placing former stars among shoppers rather than in a conventional fan zone.

The next test after the final

The immediate question is whether this kind of partnership can outlive the World Cup spotlight. If tournament visitors continue treating American stores, restaurants and roadside attractions as part of the football journey, clubs and brands will have a wider map for engaging supporters beyond the stadium.
