MLS Formally Introduced Larry Berg

The calendar decision

The biggest structural issue is the move toward a schedule that is more closely aligned with the international game. MLS is preparing to leave behind its long-standing spring-to-autumn rhythm, with a shortened 14-game season set to bridge the change before a new format begins in July 2027 and runs to a final in May 2028.

That sounds neat on paper. In practice, it means weather questions, stadium availability, fixture congestion and a major shift in club planning. Berg is walking into a reform that could reshape the league’s identity.

The Apple era - and what comes next

The current Apple TV agreement runs through 2029, so Berg does not need an immediate rescue job. He does, however, need a vision.

  • MLS must decide how broad it wants its reach to be.
  • It must balance subscription value with visibility.
  • It must keep momentum while global competition for attention intensifies.

Media rights are no longer just a commercial issue; they are a growth strategy.

Roster rules under the spotlight

Berg also takes charge with ongoing pressure around roster construction. MLS has long tried to balance parity with star power, but that balance is never settled. Clubs want flexibility, fans want quality, and the league still has to protect competitive integrity.

Berg said he has “muitas ideias.” He will need them quickly. The next few months will be about transition, but the real story starts when MLS begins turning those ideas into policy - and when the rest of the league decides whether his common vision is convincing enough to follow.
