Tommy Fleetwood Fires Back at Pat McAfee Over England

Banter with a point

McAfee and his team reportedly opened with the familiar needle, shouting, “It’s never coming home,” as they teased an England fan after another painful near-miss. Fleetwood could easily have bristled. Instead, he answered like someone who understands exactly what international football does to people: it invites mockery, pride and defensiveness all at once.

That is why the exchange landed. England are still judged like a giant of the game, expected to go deep and criticised harshly when they fall short. The United States, by contrast, tends to be measured against its own progress curve. Fleetwood’s comeback gently exposed that difference.

More than a punchline

The better part of Fleetwood’s response came after the zinger. “I was actually really enjoying being in the United States while the [USMNT] were having a run in the World Cup, and the positivity,” Fleetwood said. That line matters more than the joke.

For all the easy cross-Atlantic teasing, there is something refreshing about the way the USMNT can still generate broad curiosity when momentum builds. Fleetwood seemed to recognise that energy rather than dismiss it. He even added: “I would have liked you to have gone further. I really would. I genuinely mean it.”

What football rivalry should sound like

That is the sweet spot for sports talk: a little needle, no malice, and enough respect underneath it to keep the conversation human. Fleetwood gave as good as he got, but he also avoided the smugness that often ruins this kind of exchange.

For England, the next question is the familiar one - how to turn promise into a title. For the United States, the storyline remains growth, belief and whether the next tournament can bring another step forward. Either way, the banter is not going anywhere.
