Irankunda to Sporting CP and Herrington's Hull City Path

Why Sporting could suit Irankunda

For Australian attackers, the biggest question is rarely talent. It is platform, patience and the right level of pressure. Sporting CP appears to offer all three.

Awer Mabil, speaking in support of his team-mate, was clear: “It’s a very good move for him,” Mabil said. “It’s a perfect club also for him to take that next step, and then from there on he will make a bigger step for sure.”

That feels important. Irankunda has always looked like a player who can change a game in a flash, but the next phase is about rhythm, decision-making and learning how to handle bigger tactical demands.

Herrington’s route may be rougher - and valuable

If reports are right, Herrington could be walking into a very different environment at Hull City. A relegation fight, if it comes, can be unforgiving for a young defender. But it can also accelerate growth.

For the national team, that matters. Australia do not just need flair; they need players hardened by high-stakes football. If Herrington earns real responsibility quickly, the Asian Cup conversation changes.

A squad that is already moving

These reported moves also fit a wider picture. Australia’s squad is evolving, with experienced players shifting clubs and younger names pushing harder into view.

Mabil’s view on Irankunda carried that sense of succession too: “Nes is growing a lot,” he said. “You can see his growth over the last couple of years and you saw it at the World Cup also. We just have to continue to be there for him and guide him.”

That may be the key theme between now and January. Not hype, but guidance. If Irankunda and Herrington land well and play regularly, Tony Popovic could head to the Asian Cup with a squad that looks younger, bolder and far more dangerous.
