Another report noted that Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot could start the 2026/27 season together again, after being used by Carrick only six times last year. The same update said that quartet have been on the pitch together only 10 times in four years.
That matters. If the back four is still chasing continuity, the midfield screen becomes even more important. It has to cover space, stop counters and reduce the number of emergency defensive moments.
There is also a wider market signal. Other reports suggest rivals are still prioritising central midfield, with Manchester City linked with Adam Wharton. Clubs chasing major honours rarely stop adding quality in the engine room.
United may still be fine if Carrick can build a compact, possession-led structure from the options already in the squad. But if matches become stretched, or if the schedule starts to bite, the lack of another midfield signing could become the story quickly.
The first few weeks of the season should offer an early answer. If United look open through the centre, the next transfer window will come into focus fast.
