The headline belongs to Wasilewski, who appears to have turned two difficult matchups into a personal showcase.
What stands out is not just the finishing, but the tone around it. Saint Joseph reportedly has plenty of new faces at varsity level, yet Wasilewski insisted the group has settled quickly: “It’s showing us we can and we will win these tough games that come later in the season.”
Ambition in high school football can sound premature in August. In this case, it sounds earned. Saint Joseph’s sectional exit last year still appears to sit in the background, and with Mishawaka Marian now competing in 3A, there is at least a sense of a different route opening up.
Coach Phil DePauw did not shy away from that. “I believe, and I believe they’re right there with me, that this team can go a long, long way in the postseason,” he said. It is the kind of quote that only lands when performances back it up.
The wider South Bend area also looks deep. Marian, Penn and Adams all faced demanding opposition, and that matters as much as the scorelines. Marian’s willingness to test itself against elite opponents says plenty about its own ambitions, while Penn coach Jeff Hart captured the mood best: “Every time you go out in this sport, you’re playing against teams that could beat you.”
That may be the real takeaway from the weekend. Saint Joseph has momentum, Wasilewski has the spotlight, and the local standard appears high. The next question is whether the Huskies can carry that edge into the tougher stretch of the schedule - and keep turning early promise into a genuine postseason push.
