Replacing Mateo Goy looks like the most obvious early storyline.

That kind of internal battle can sharpen a squad before the games really matter. Mendota do not necessarily need a spectacular goalkeeper every week; they need a reliable one, particularly while a reshaped back line settles into the rhythm of a new season.

Goals should not be the issue

Even with the departure of Johan Cortez, there is still a strong attacking base.

• The report says Cesar Casas returned after 36 goals and 21 assists.
• Isaac Diaz is also said to be back after another 36-goal season.
• Daniel Garcia and Adian Chavez offer more depth around the front line.

That matters because replacing a star is rarely about one player doing everything. It is often about spreading the burden, and Mendota appear to have enough finishing, movement and familiarity in attacking areas to do exactly that.

Defensive growth could define the season

If the forwards keep Mendota dangerous, the defence may decide how far this group goes. Nanez, Hugo Falcon and Cole Kleckner give the Trojans a platform, while the midfield core of Omar Nanez, Aaron Venegas and Gael Garcia should help protect that unit.

The next step is turning promise into consistency. If the goalkeeper race produces a clear answer and the defensive improvement Myers is looking for arrives early, Mendota should again look like a serious Class 1A contender once the new campaign gets underway.
