Colorado State, Wyoming Expand Border War Series

A rivalry with real shape

The update says Colorado State and Wyoming are expected to begin an eight-year annual series from 2028 in:

  • Men’s basketball
  • Women’s basketball
  • Volleyball
  • Soccer

Home venues are expected to alternate, which gives the arrangement more than ceremonial value. For soccer, that matters. Rivalries can be hard to protect in college athletics, where scheduling shifts and conference politics often get in the way. A guaranteed annual date gives both programs a fixed point around which to build atmosphere, recruiting pitches and fan interest.

Why the soccer angle stands out

Before the formal series begins, the report says the schools are due to meet across those sports in 2026, including a soccer clash on September 17 at CSU. More meetings are also expected in 2027.

That bridge is important. Rather than waiting for 2028, Colorado State appears to be laying the emotional groundwork now. In soccer, familiarity fuels intensity, and intensity tends to lift everything around a fixture - from crowd energy to how a program is perceived on campus.

Basketball’s message: continuity

The same update also says men’s basketball coach Ali Farokhmanesh has completed his 2026-27 staff with three figures tied closely to the program:

  • Nico Carvacho
  • Baylor Hebb
  • Parker Teff

It feels deliberate. CSU appears to be betting on continuity, shared culture and people who already understand Fort Collins. Carvacho’s return, in particular, is the kind of alumni link that tends to resonate inside a program.

The next storyline is obvious: whether that cross-sport rivalry push starts to show up in atmosphere and momentum, beginning with September 17, 2026 in soccer and rolling into the broader Border War calendar after that.
