Sanchez has played in some of Europe’s biggest football cities, but Canada asks different questions.
That adaptation period matters, especially for a player arriving with such a long career behind him. Yet Sagna clearly believes the football part will come naturally. “Alexis Sanchez is a top player,” he said, before adding that early feedback from training had been encouraging. “They could see the difference of quality, they could see why he is Alexis Sanchez.”
The modern version of Sanchez is no longer the explosive force who lit up Arsenal and shone for Barcelona, but that does not mean the edge has completely gone. Even through a more uneven second half of his career - including difficult spells after leaving north London - he has still shown flashes of end product and personality.
Sagna’s argument is really about environment as much as talent. “I think it’s very important for him to just enjoy football again and to show why he’s been performing for Arsenal, why he’s been in the top 20 best players in the world at some point,” he explained.
That feels like the heart of the story. MLS can reward experienced attackers who arrive motivated, fit and engaged.
Sagna also made the case for the city itself, describing Montreal as a place with “a European aspect with US infrastructure.” For a player coming from different dressing rooms and cultures, that blend could help. So could the city’s multilingual, multicultural feel.
“It’s amongst the best places to live,” Sagna said. “It’s fun, the vibe is good, people are happy and it’s a nice country.”
If Sanchez embraces that quickly, this could become one of the more intriguing MLS stories to watch over the closing months of the season - not just whether he scores, but whether he starts smiling on the pitch again.
