Reports suggest Joseph has had to replace 12 seniors from the title-winning squad, which is usually enough to change the feel of a season. Yet the coach's confidence has not wavered.
“They are locked in and ready to go, and I don't feel the level of talent has decreased,” Joseph said.
That belief matters. School soccer can turn quickly when a big graduating class leaves, but Natick appear to have a ready-made focal point in Cole Boggis. The UMass-bound forward is reported to be back after a major role in last season’s final, when Natick beat St John’s Prep 3-2. Senior captain Luca Tavilla is also expected to be one of the figures setting the tone.
Even with momentum from a championship run, defending the title rarely gets easier. The report says Natick have won all three pre-season matches, but the wider Division 1 field looks deep again.
That is the challenge facing Natick: not simply replacing experience, but doing it while rivals believe this is their opening.
Beyond Division 1, the season also opens with plenty of intrigue. West Springfield begin as Division 2 champions, Norwell are aiming to stay on top in Division 3, and players such as Max Tilmann of Medfield and Jeffrey Luis of Boston International give the state game more star power.
For now, though, the spotlight stays on Natick. The early fixtures should reveal whether Joseph’s confidence is justified - and whether the champions still have enough edge to turn last year’s breakthrough into the start of something bigger.
