Tessmann did not drift through the campaign. He became a real part of the team.
Those details matter. Lyon finished fourth, which underlined the progress in Fonseca’s side, and Tessmann’s role grew as that push gathered pace. A midfielder of his age, availability and upward curve would usually be a player to retain, not market.
The pressure point is financial. The update says Lyon need $23m before the end of June to satisfy French financial fair play requirements, with a further $69m potentially needed before the end of August if Champions League qualification does not bring the biggest reward.
That is why the reported asking price - as high as $23m - stands out. Tessmann only arrived last summer for around $7m, so any sale in that range would represent a significant gain. Interest said to be coming from Germany, Italy and MLS gives Lyon a market, even if Fonseca would rather keep a player who had settled quickly.
Selling Tessmann might ease the books, but it would also weaken midfield continuity. He appears to offer balance, physical presence and a growing authority in possession. Moving him on after one season would send a clear message: Lyon are still in a position where opportunity in the market can outweigh sporting preference.
The next step is whether interest turns into firm bids. If it does, Lyon will have to decide whether immediate financial relief is worth sacrificing a player who looked increasingly important to their climb back toward the Champions League.
