That matters because the current arrangement appears to be built around the men’s project alone. The update says the club would pay market rates for the extra matches and for training time tied to the women’s side. It also says the city could bring in more than $38,400 a year under the revised terms.
For Portland, that is the key point. Expansion is easier to defend politically when extra use also brings extra revenue.
The sensitive part is the structure already in place. Reports suggest Hearts of Pine invested roughly $3 million in stadium improvements, with that commitment helping secure rent-free training sessions and up to 25 matches a season over the first 10 years.
That original trade-off helped get the project moving. Reopening the agreement without undoing it is the real challenge. City officials reportedly believe the added dates can be absorbed without displacing other users, which is likely why support inside City Hall appears to be firm.
On the football side, the logic is straightforward. The men’s team reportedly drew average crowds of around 5,800, a strong early signal in USL League One. A women’s side would give the club a second property, more summer inventory, and a broader community footprint.
The report says the planned USL W League entry would play a short May and June schedule of around 10 to 12 games. That makes the stadium question even more important: the league window is compact, so certainty on access matters.
Portland’s next move is now the story to watch. Once the delayed committee discussion is rescheduled, the decision will show whether the city sees Hearts of Pine as a tenant with a successful launch - or as a club ready for a larger role in the city’s football landscape.
