Freiburg were booked inside five minutes when Philipp Treu went into the book, and Villa also had to manage early cautions for Buendia and Matty Cash in a combative opening. The contest turned sharply before the interval. Rogers created the breakthrough for Tielemans at 40'58'', then John McGinn supplied Buendia on 45 minutes as Villa took a firm grip on the score before half-time.
Any hope of a Freiburg response faded before the hour. Buendia turned provider at 57'50'', slipping Rogers in for Villa's third goal and effectively settling the result. The home side reacted with changes just after the hour, introducing Lucas Holer and Maximilian Rosenfelder, while Jordy Makengo, Derry Lionel Scherhant and Christian Gunter also came on later as they searched for a way back.
Unai Emery's side were comfortable from there. Amadou Onana entered in the 65th minute, with Jadon Sancho, Ian Maatsen, Tyrone Mings and Douglas Luiz also seeing out the win. McGinn's late yellow card was among the last notable moments before full time. The stats matched the scoreline, and a report said Martinez played through a fractured finger suffered in the warm-up before preserving Villa's clean sheet.
