England Gets Less Domestic Betting Support Than Rivals

England’s confidence gap

The report says only 20% of bets in the English market backed Thomas Tuchel’s team to win the tournament. That figure was below Portugal, France, Austria and Germany in their respective home markets.

Portugal reportedly led the patriotic betting table, with 57% of domestic bets supporting its own national team. France was listed at 29%, Austria at 25% and Germany at 24%.

Those figures should not be mistaken for a footballing verdict. Betting behaviour can reflect caution, price, past disappointment and the desire to find value elsewhere. England’s history of falling short in major tournaments may encourage supporters to keep emotion separate from their selections.

Spain’s global appeal

The report presents Spain as the most popular team among Entain bettors worldwide, ahead of France, with England and Portugal sharing the next position.

Yet Spain’s domestic backing was reportedly only 16%. That contrast is revealing. Spanish supporters may admire their team’s tournament pedigree while remaining more selective with their money, whereas international bettors can approach the same side without the emotional baggage of a home fan.

It is a familiar tension in football: the team supporters love is not always the team they trust most to deliver.

The real test comes on the pitch

For England, limited domestic betting support could become either a warning sign or an irrelevance. A confident start would quickly change the mood, while another cautious performance could make the pre-tournament doubts feel justified.

The next storyline to watch is whether Tuchel’s side can turn outside expectations into momentum - and persuade a sceptical home market that loyalty and logic can finally point in the same direction.
