Manuel Neuer to Start Germany's World Cup Opener

Experience wins the debate

Neuer has not played for Germany since the Euro 2024 quarter-final defeat by Spain, but Nagelsmann believes the Bayern Munich goalkeeper’s experience outweighs concerns over his limited preparation.

The coach described the decision as a “cold start”, yet his message was clear: Neuer’s familiarity with Germany’s defensive routines and major-tournament pressure makes the switch less risky than it might appear.

Neuer’s full training return at Germany’s base in North Carolina was an important step. The goalkeeper took part in a public session attended by around 3,000 supporters, providing visible confirmation that he is ready to resume competitive duty.

Baumann’s difficult setback

Baumann started Germany’s final warm-up match, a 2-1 victory over the United States, and had appeared to establish a strong case for retaining the position.

The Hoffenheim goalkeeper admitted the reversal was painful. “It was hard to take at first. It was far from cool,” Baumann said, while making clear that Germany’s wider ambitions came first.

Nagelsmann praised that response as professional and respectful. Baumann now returns to a supporting role, but his performances have ensured the goalkeeper debate will not disappear permanently.

Neuer’s next test

Neuer is expected to win his 125th cap when Germany begin their group campaign in Houston. Curaçao may be viewed as an underdog, but the match will still test Neuer’s sharpness, communication and ability to handle the demands of a major tournament.

For Nagelsmann, the immediate priority is a calm start. For Neuer, it is the chance to show that experience can still command the gloves on the biggest stage.
