In 1994, Rogers’ task was to install natural grass inside the Pontiac Silverdome for four matches. It was a pioneering project, but a contained one.
The 2026 challenge is spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The report says eight stadiums that normally use artificial turf will switch to temporary natural-grass systems, making consistency a tournament-wide engineering test rather than a one-off experiment.
Those systems are expected to combine layers of sod, reinforcement, sand-based rootzones, drainage and vacuum technology. Most venues are set to use a Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass blend, while New York is expected to use Bermudagrass.
Rogers highlighted how modern specifications have moved beyond simply putting grass inside a stadium.
“They have a vacuum ventilation specification now and each stadium has to have the ability to suck water out if they get a rainstorm,” Rogers explained.
Portable LED grow lights are also part of the solution, particularly in outdoor grounds where shade can slow recovery. That matters during a major tournament, when pitches face repeated use, changing weather and little time between matches.
The goal is not cosmetic perfection. Players need reliable footing, predictable ball speed and a surface that can withstand the demands of elite football.
For all the advances, Rogers offered a reminder that technology cannot remove the basic vulnerability of natural turf.
“If you abuse the grass, it will die. And there’s nothing that can change that,” he said.
That warning gives the 2026 project a human element. The equipment may be sophisticated, but the final judgment will come from players and coaches competing on the surface.
When the tournament begins, the pitches will become a storyline of their own. The next test for Rogers’ programme is whether a lesson born in the Silverdome can withstand a World Cup played across three countries.
