Goalkeeper Taren Wente Commits to Pitt Soccer

Choosing fit over certainty

The report says Wente, an Eldorado High graduate and New Mexico United academy product, is expected to join Pitt for summer workouts on 2 July after committing on 1 June.

His decision was not without risk. Wente reportedly plans to study engineering, following the path taken by his father and older brother, and his family initially questioned whether rejecting Creighton was financially wise.

“I didn't know what was ahead of me. There was a future where I didn't commit to any school because the recruiting situation is really hard here in New Mexico. It was definitely scary for me,” Wente said.

That patience has reportedly led to a place at an ACC programme, where the standard of competition should provide a significant test for a young goalkeeper.

Noel provides a familiar connection

A key part of the story was reportedly played by Valentin Noel, the New Mexico United midfielder and former Pitt player. The update says Noel contacted Pitt’s coaching staff on Wente’s behalf, helping create a pathway that quickly became a serious option.

For Wente, the appeal appears to extend beyond football. Pitt’s engineering programme, its ACC platform and the chance to work under national championship-winning coach Jay Vidovich all reportedly influenced his choice.

From Albuquerque to Pittsburgh

The move would also represent a major personal transition. Wente has lived only in Albuquerque and acknowledged that Pittsburgh will be “a bit of a culture shock,” he said.

The next storyline will be whether Wente can turn a carefully chosen opportunity into a role within Pitt’s goalkeeper group. His summer workouts should offer the first indication of how quickly he adapts to a new city, a new level and the demands of college soccer.
