Gary Lineker to Host Daily Netflix World Cup Show

A familiar voice, a different stage

Lineker presented BBC tournament coverage from 1998 until his departure last year. The upcoming World Cup will therefore be the first since 1994 in which he is not working for the corporation.

His new role keeps him close to the biggest sporting event in the game, but places him in a format built around conversation rather than a traditional studio desk. Shearer and Richards bring their own playing experience, personality and strong opinions, giving the programme a natural chemistry before a ball is kicked.

The guest list is also expected to include Harry Maguire, Frank Lampard, Millie Bright, Patrick Vieira, Romesh Ranganathan and Niall Horan.

From broadcaster to host

Lineker’s BBC exit followed a social-media controversy, after which he apologised for reposting material containing an offensive image. He later said his departure had “petered out”, while stressing his affection for the broadcaster.

The move to Netflix gives him greater control over the tone and rhythm of the show. His comments about enjoying life “without having to tread on eggshells” point to a presenter ready to be more relaxed, direct and conversational.

England access could be decisive

The programme will feature reports from Rob Jones and Alex Aljoe, with a particular focus on the England camp. That access could become its biggest advantage, especially during the quieter tournament days when supporters want more than match highlights.

The challenge will be turning access into insight without losing the spontaneity that made the podcast popular. Once the World Cup begins, the key storyline will be whether Lineker’s new platform can rival the reach and authority of the BBC while offering something less formal.
