Six West Lothian Schools Take On 4,223-Mile World Cup Walk

A route built around one total

Blackburn Primary School, Hopefield Nursery, Murrayfield Primary & Nursery, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary, Connolly School Campus and Pinewood School are taking part in the joint initiative.

The format is deliberately collective:

  • Six schools are contributing to one overall distance.
  • Pupils, staff and families can add recorded walking miles.
  • The target is linked to Scotland’s reported arrival in Miami.

That structure makes the challenge more accessible than asking one school or one class to carry the full distance. Each walk becomes part of a larger journey, with the football fixture providing a clear deadline.

Turning tournament buzz into movement

The project uses the World Cup as more than a backdrop. A major international match creates a reason for children to keep participating, while the shared target gives families a simple way to join in outside school hours.

The report quotes Blackburn Primary’s acting principal teacher, Siannon Ramsay, saying: “Children, families and staff have been out walking and recording their miles.”

That wider involvement is central to the idea. The challenge is not only about reaching Miami on paper; it is also intended to promote walking, family participation and the health benefits of regular activity.

The finish line in sight

Covering 4,223 miles is an ambitious target, particularly with the deadline tied to Scotland’s reported match against Brazil. The schools are planning a Scottish-themed fun day if they reach the mark before the team arrives.

The next milestone is whether the combined total can cross the finish line by 24 June. If it does, the Scotland-Brazil fixture will carry an added local connection, with six schools having turned the journey to Miami into their own community World Cup campaign.
