FC Cincinnati Waive Matt Miazga and Buy Out Contract

A defining chapter in Cincinnati

Miazga’s spell with FC Cincinnati will be remembered most strongly for the club’s breakthrough 2023 campaign. After joining from Chelsea in August 2022, he became a central figure in a team that won the Supporters’ Shield.

That season also delivered individual recognition. Miazga was named MLS Defender of the Year, selected for the league’s Best XI and included in the All-Star squad. His leadership and physical presence helped establish Cincinnati as a serious force in Major League Soccer.

“He was a foundational piece in the growth of our club,” Albright added, underlining how important Miazga was during Cincinnati’s rise from expansion project to contender.

A decision driven by roster realities

The announcement gave no reason for the move, leaving the timing open to interpretation. What is clear is the practical impact: Miazga no longer occupies a roster place or counts against Cincinnati’s future salary budget.

That flexibility could prove valuable as the club reshapes its defensive options. Waiving a player with Miazga’s experience is not a routine decision, particularly given his previous success in MLS and his established relationship with the Cincinnati fanbase.

Albright also praised the mentality Miazga brought to the team, saying he “helped turn around the trajectory of this team.” Those words capture the defender’s wider contribution beyond appearances and defensive work.

For Miazga, the next challenge is finding a new club capable of using his experience, authority and knowledge of MLS. For Cincinnati, the focus turns to replacing a proven leader while preserving the competitive identity he helped build.

The next transfer window should reveal whether FC Cincinnati invest in an established centre-back or trust a younger defensive option to take Miazga’s place.
