Janavlekar said consumption is moving towards “ecossistemas integrados e de alto engajamento, em vez de experiências isoladas”. That vision places ZEE5 at the centre of a broader package combining live sport, entertainment and regional programming.
offers Zee a globally recognised property with strong appeal among younger viewers. The report says the company could use the rights to create cross-promotion across its television channels and streaming service, while giving advertisers a fresh environment beyond cricket.
Vishal Agrahari, vice-president of paid media at BC Web Wise, said telecom companies could see value in linking ZEE5 subscriptions to data plans during coverage. That could help Zee turn tournament interest into longer-term engagement rather than a short-lived audience spike.
The challenge is formidable. JioStar remains the benchmark for sports depth, with cricket at the heart of its offering and football also part of its portfolio. Sony continues to compete for football audiences, while Netflix and Prime Video are seeking greater relevance in live and premium sports entertainment.
The question is not whether Indian viewers will watch . A major global tournament should attract attention. The harder task is convincing audiences and distributors that football deserves space in recurring bundles when cricket continues to drive the strongest commercial conversations.
Umair Mohammad described Zee’s approach as an attempt to “diferenciar em um cenário no qual o conteúdo premium se concentra cada vez mais em poucos grupos”. That differentiation will depend on more than the rights themselves: presentation, local-language coverage, pricing and digital engagement will all matter.
The next cycle will reveal whether Zee has bought a moment or built a platform. If ZEE5 can convert event-driven curiosity into repeat viewing, the move could reshape India’s sports-streaming battle.
