Chalobah had not made the original 26-man group, but Tuchel told him to stay ready. That warning suddenly became reality while the defender was travelling, forcing him to abandon plans for Los Angeles, find new boots and report for international duty.
“When I saw the message, he asked if I was free to call, and I said yes,” Chalobah explained. “We spoke on FaceTime and he broke the news to me. I was just over the moon.”
The late addition makes him England’s 27th player and gives Tuchel extra defensive cover after Livramento’s withdrawal.
The call-up also reunites Chalobah with the manager who handed him his first Chelsea opportunities. That relationship could help him settle quickly in an England squad preparing for the demands of a major tournament.
Chalobah described the connection as “really fun”, while Tuchel appears to view him primarily as a right-sided centre-back. His ability to operate across the defence adds flexibility, particularly when tournament squads face injuries, suspensions and a relentless schedule.
His route to the World Cup reflects a career built on patience. After periods out of favour at club level, Chalobah worked his way back into contention following a strong campaign for Chelsea.
The moment carries extra meaning because Chalobah posted a picture with the World Cup trophy eight years ago, alongside the words “one day”. That ambition has now brought him to the tournament itself.
His first involvement could come against Ghana in Boston, where an unexpected holiday interruption may become the beginning of an international breakthrough.
