Simon has held Spain’s first-choice role since 2021 and was part of the side that became European champions two years ago. He started the goalless draw with Cape Verde before keeping his place for the 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia.
Hart said the Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper “has not really put a foot wrong” since taking over. That is the strongest argument for Luis de la Fuente’s decision: replacing a goalkeeper who has delivered consistently can create a problem that does not currently exist.
Spain’s choice is therefore about trust as much as ability. Simon knows the defence, owns the position and has built a substantial international record.
Raya’s omission is difficult to frame as a judgement on his quality. The 30-year-old arrived after helping Arsenal win the Premier League, claiming the Golden Glove after conceding 27 goals in 38 league games.
Hart described Raya as “electric and a real matchwinner”, while also arguing that Arsenal would not have won the title without his elite performances. The goalkeeper has won 13 caps for Spain, but remains behind Simon in the pecking order.
For Hart, that is not a concern. He said Spain’s manager would not “lose a wink of sleep” if either goalkeeper had to play.
De la Fuente has shown no sign of changing course before the Uruguay test. Another composed performance from Simon would strengthen the case for continuity, while Raya’s challenge is to remain ready for the opportunity that may eventually come.
The goalkeeper decision will be watched closely as Spain chase first place in Group H. For now, Hart believes Simon still has the shirt to lose.
