Leah Rutkowski Named Girls Coach of the Year

Turning an early loss into momentum

Central’s campaign began with a 3-2 defeat by Lake Forest, but the response became the defining feature of the season. The report says the Tigers followed that setback with a 15-match winning streak.

One five-match stretch stood out even further: Central reportedly outscored opponents 27-0. Four shutouts in one demanding week gave Rutkowski an early indication that her team had developed beyond its opening disappointment.

That recovery matters in a season decided by narrow margins. Rather than allowing the first loss to shape the campaign, Central used it as a reset point.

Revenge at the biggest moment

The report says Central entered the postseason as the No. 1 seed and progressed through the regional and sectional rounds before meeting Lake Forest again in the supersectional.

A year earlier, that fixture had ended Rutkowski’s first season in charge. This time, Central reportedly won 2-1, earning its return to the state finals before completing the run with the programme’s second state title in three seasons.

Peyton McMahon was highlighted for her competitiveness and leadership, while Kira Stavropoulos was praised for helping maintain the group’s personality. Those contributions reflected a team identity built around work rate, possession and unselfish play.

Influences behind Rutkowski’s approach

Rutkowski has reportedly spent about 10 years coaching at Central, including time as an assistant under Sarah Fack. Her wider coaching influences include Jay Schwarzrock, Kyle McCaughn, Todd Sherwood and Joe Schroeder.

The next challenge will be sustaining the standard. Replacing senior leadership while defending a state title will test whether this season was a breakthrough or the start of a longer Crystal Lake Central era.
