Bray Wanderers Appoint Áine O’Gorman as Academy Director

A landmark appointment

O’Gorman becomes the first woman appointed to such a position in Ireland, taking responsibility for six academy teams and Bray’s emerging talent programme.

The role reaches beyond one age group or one team. It is designed to align development across the club’s boys’ and girls’ pathways, with O’Gorman working alongside technical director David Foley.

Foley said her experience of “high-performing environments” and understanding of “what it takes” could raise standards throughout the academy.

From international forward to pathway leader

The appointment represents a significant step so soon after O’Gorman’s playing career ended. She had already moved into coaching with Bray’s women’s under-17 side, but the director’s role gives her influence across the entire structure.

Her playing record brings immediate authority. O’Gorman won 119 senior caps for Ireland, featured in the squad for the country’s first Women’s World Cup in 2023 and won the Women’s Premier Division twice.

She also scored more than 200 club goals and finished as the league’s leading scorer on five occasions. That experience, combined with her familiarity with Bray’s staff and players, gives the club a clear bridge between elite performance and youth development.

One pathway, two games

Bray’s academy investment forms part of the government-backed League of Ireland Academy Investment Programme. The challenge now is turning that investment into consistent daily standards for players, coaches and families.

O’Gorman said Bray has “a wealth of talent” in the club and local community. Foley, meanwhile, believes her influence can benefit “boys and girls alike”.

The next test will be whether O’Gorman can build a shared identity across the academy and help more local players progress towards senior football. For Bray, this appointment is not simply a promotion - it is a statement about the future of the club.
