Sam Kerr Officially Signs for Gotham FC in NWSL Return

A different Gotham

Kerr is not returning to the same club she knew as Sky Blue. Gotham have rebranded, moved into a major New York venue and emerged as one of the NWSL’s strongest teams. Reports say the club has since collected league and cup honours, transforming its identity from rebuilding side to serious contender.

That change is central to Kerr’s decision.

“Gotham as a club has completely changed, and if I was going to come back to a club, it was to one that wants to win trophies,” Kerr said.

Her return also reflects the NWSL’s broader rise. The competition is now deeper, more visible and increasingly capable of attracting established stars from Europe’s biggest leagues.

Ambition over nostalgia

Kerr’s motivation appears clear: this is not simply a sentimental homecoming.

“They're lifting trophies, have some of the best players in the world, and I think that's what makes them so attractive at the moment - good coach, good players and winning trophies,” she added.

The presence of her wife, Kristie Mewis, has also helped shape the move. Mewis previously played a key role in Gotham’s success, while Kerr said she spoke warmly about head coach Juan Carlos Amoros, the city and the club’s environment.

For Gotham, the signing would add a forward whose reputation was built on movement, power and relentless finishing. Kerr’s NWSL record remains part of the appeal, but her leadership may be just as valuable as her goals.

The next chapter

Kerr is expected to join during the second half of the season, with a reported debut possibility at Gotham’s Queens Classic at Citi Field.

That occasion would offer an immediate test of both player and club. Gotham have built a winning culture; Kerr now has the chance to show she can help extend it.
