2026 Durand Cup to Feature 24 Clubs and Seven Debutants

A broader competitive mix

The proposed field would bring together Indian Super League and I-League clubs, Services teams, emerging domestic sides and international entrants. That blend should create a sharper test for established teams, particularly against opponents with less familiar playing styles.

The report identifies Defenders FC of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces and Nongkseh Sports, Social and Cultural Club, winners of the Meghalaya Premier League, among the debutants. Their inclusion reflects the Durand Cup’s continuing role as a bridge between India’s established professional structure and its wider football ecosystem.

Seven new clubs also means reputation alone may not settle the group stage. The tournament’s early rounds could become an opportunity for lesser-known teams to make a national impression.

Kolkata remains the tournament’s anchor

Kolkata is reportedly set to host two groups, the opener, two quarter-finals, a semi-final and the final. The city’s schedule would give the competition a clear narrative centre while placing major local names under sustained pressure.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant, East Bengal FC and Mohammedan SC are expected to feature in Kolkata, alongside Services representatives and debutants Baghpat FC and Samaleswari Sporting. That combination should give the host city a mix of tradition, rivalry and unpredictability.

A wider national footprint

The reported schedule would also take the tournament to Ranchi, Imphal, Shillong and Guwahati. Ranchi is set to make its Durand Cup hosting debut, while Shillong would reportedly stage one of the semi-finals.

Guwahati’s group is expected to include defending champions NorthEast United FC, adding immediate competitive weight to the expanded regional format. Imphal and Shillong, meanwhile, would provide platforms for local clubs and emerging players.

The next storyline will be the group draw and whether the seven debutants can disrupt the established order when the tournament begins on July 25.
