Gianna Hanf Skips Senior Season to Chase U-17 World Cup

A record-setting high school career

Hanf leaves Northern Burlington after a junior campaign that reportedly became the finest in the programme’s history. The report credits her with school records of 36 goals in one season and 66 across her career, while she also helped the team claim its first sectional title.

Her individual recognition reportedly included Burlington County Scholastic League Player of the Year, second-team All-State honours and the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year award for girls football.

Northern Burlington coach Shannon Yesner said Hanf had transformed the profile of the programme.

“She helped elevate the Northern Burlington girls football programme by making a name for herself and also for the school,” Yesner said.

Chasing a place on the world stage

The next opportunity is a reported training camp in Chiba, Japan, scheduled for 3-6 July. Hanf trained with the U.S. U-17 squad last autumn and now has another chance to impress before the World Cup squad is decided.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Morocco from 17 October to 7 November, with the report also saying Hanf’s North Carolina commitment remains part of her longer-term plan. Former Immaculata standout Amari Manning has reportedly received the same camp invitation.

For Hanf, the decision is both exciting and emotional.

“It's bittersweet leaving school, but this is a great opportunity for myself and I couldn't have gotten it without my coaches, my team-mates and my family,” she said.

The next test

Yesner backed the decision, saying: “I couldn't thank her enough for what she brought to our programme and I'm excited for her to have the chance to make the US U-17 World Cup team.”

That chance now moves from local records to international competition. The Japan camp will be Hanf’s next major checkpoint, with World Cup selection the storyline to watch before she begins the next stage of her career.
