How Matheus Cunha Could Help Manchester United Keep Rashford

Cunha offers central flexibility

Cunha has scored three goals for Brazil at the tournament while operating as more than a traditional number nine. With Rayan and Vinicius Jr providing width, he has dropped into midfield, linked attacks and still arrived in the penalty area.

That profile could matter at United. Cunha began last season as a number 10 in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 before moving to the left under Carrick. United have generally preferred Benjamin Sesko or Bryan Mbeumo as the central forward, but Cunha’s Brazil role strengthens the case for using him there more regularly.

It would also create a clearer role for Rashford on the left, where his direct running and ability to attack space remain most effective.

Rashford’s future remains open

Rashford’s preferred move to Barcelona appears less likely after the Catalan club moved for Anthony Gordon. Reports suggest his camp has held positive talks with United, and a return to Old Trafford now looks increasingly viable.

His recent record gives both sides a reason to consider it. Rashford produced 14 goals and 14 assists for Barcelona last season, although an early-2026 dip and inconsistent England performances have complicated the picture.

United’s decision will therefore be about balance rather than reputation. Cunha’s ability to cover the number 10 and centre-forward positions could reduce the pressure on Rashford to play centrally.

Norway is the next test

Brazil face Norway in the World Cup last 16, giving Cunha another chance to prove that his central role works against a major opponent. United will be watching his movement and combination play as closely as his finishing.

If Cunha continues to deliver, Carrick may have the tactical framework to welcome Rashford back without weakening the structure of the attack.
