Forsythe had recently joined the UMass Lowell men’s football programme while studying economics. The report says he arrived in 2026 after spells with Ashland University and Shawnee State.
His time at Shawnee State included a full campaign as the team’s goalkeeper. He reportedly started every game in 2025, providing a strong foundation before making the move to Lowell.
That progression pointed to a player building experience and competing for a larger role at the next stage of his college career.
UMass Lowell athletic director Lynn Coutts said the department was “heartbroken” by Forsythe’s death.
“Although Toby's time as a River Hawk was cut far too short, he left a meaningful impact and will always be remembered as a cherished member of our UMass Lowell family,” Coutts said in the statement, according to the report.
Head coach Kyle Zenoni also described Forsythe as a determined goalkeeper who arrived at training ready to compete and improve. The report says Zenoni praised his willingness to earn his place and avoid shortcuts.
Those tributes paint a picture of a player valued not only for his ability, but also for his approach to daily work.
The focus now turns to supporting Forsythe’s teammates, coaches, classmates and loved ones. Any further official updates, as well as plans to honour his memory, will be closely followed as UMass Lowell prepares for the next chapter of its season.
