Rutgers Rise to No. 21 After Three Ranked Wins

Jerome delivers the decisive moment

Joshua Jerome reportedly scored the winner against Ohio State in the 54th minute, finishing a move that began with Rutgers forcing an error in the home side’s half.

The sophomore midfielder has credited the collective press rather than presenting the goal as an individual breakthrough. That detail matters. Rutgers’ best moment of the run came from coordinated pressure, not simply a flash of attacking quality.

Jerome’s development has followed a steep curve. After starring for Freehold Township High School and Marlboro MSA Gunners Blue, he has had to adapt to the speed and physicality of Division I football. His emergence as a regular contributor gives Rutgers another important piece during a demanding schedule.

Senegal provided an earlier test

The report also says Rutgers played a closed-door friendly against Senegal during the summer, when the national team used the Scarlet Knights’ facilities while preparing for the World Cup.

Simon Gorczowski reportedly gave Rutgers an early lead after a turnover, but Senegal recovered to win 3-1. The result offered a different lesson from the recent ranked victories: Rutgers had to move the ball faster against Senegal’s pace and technical quality.

That experience appears to have sharpened the team’s response under pressure, while showing Jerome the level required to compete against elite opposition.

The next challenge is a trip to Washington on Friday. Rutgers’ reported ranking will bring added attention, but the real test is whether its pressing, discipline and Jerome’s continued growth can extend a run built on three high-value wins.
