Alexia Putellas Joins London City Lionesses in WSL

A new standard for London City

The move changes the profile of a club still establishing itself in England’s top division. London City Lionesses were promoted in 2025 and finished sixth in a 12-team WSL during their first season in the elite.

That platform is respectable, but Putellas raises expectations immediately. Her experience should add authority to the midfield, while her passing range and ability to control possession can give the team a more reliable route through difficult matches. For a developing squad, her presence also offers a daily reference point for younger players.

The challenge will be adapting that influence to the pace and physical demands of English football. London City are no longer simply trying to survive; Putellas’ arrival makes progress the clearer target.

A remarkable ownership connection

The transfer also links two recent Champions League storylines. London City Lionesses are owned by Michele Kang, who also owns OL Lyonnes. On 23 May, Putellas and Barcelona defeated the French club in the Champions League final.

Only weeks later, the midfielder has moved to another club within Kang’s football network. The contrast is striking: from Barcelona’s established dominance to a London project still building its identity.

Putellas had been a free agent since her Barcelona contract ended in late June, making the move the start of a new sporting and personal phase at 32. Her Barcelona legacy is secure; the next task is to shape London City’s ambitions.

The next WSL campaign will reveal how quickly the team can turn a landmark signing into league progress. Putellas’ first fixtures will be watched not only for her individual influence, but for whether London City can move beyond consolidation and challenge the division’s established contenders.
