Meet New Mexico's 2025-26 Gatorade Players of the Year

Soccer winners carry championship credentials

In girls’ soccer, Bryson Fankam reportedly led Hope Christian to the Class 4A state title after producing 27 goals and 14 assists. The junior midfielder was also named first-team all-state and is reportedly verbally committed to Boise State.

Winston Starr delivered a similar impact for La Cueva’s boys’ team, recording 15 goals and 12 assists during the Bears’ Class 5A championship campaign. The report says Starr earned first-team all-state and All-American recognition before being promoted to the New Mexico United first team.

Those achievements place both players at important crossroads: one preparing for college soccer and the other potentially beginning a professional pathway.

Track champions rewrite the record book

The boys’ award went to Mayfield pole vaulter Miles Odom, who reportedly cleared 16 feet, 7 inches to break the Class 5A state record. He is expected to continue his career at the University of Arizona.

Girls’ winner Anna Hastings produced one of the strongest distance-running performances of the spring. Representing Albuquerque Academy, she reportedly won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 metres at the Class 4A state championships. Her next step is expected to come at Brown.

Satete dominates in the circle and at the plate

Softball standout Malie Satete combined power with control while helping West Las Vegas win the Class 3A title. The report credits her with a .638 batting average, 15 home runs and 63 RBIs, alongside a 22-2 pitching record, 1.51 ERA and 304 strikeouts.

She also reportedly owns New Mexico’s career home-run record with 63, despite still being an underclassman.

The next storyline is whether these five can translate state-level dominance into college success, professional opportunities and national recognition.
