India have reportedly won the Special Olympics Trophy category at the past two editions of the Gothia Cup. Another triumph would turn a successful run into a landmark achievement, giving the team a rare hat-trick on one of youth football’s biggest stages.
“The players who are flying to Gothenburg tonight to compete in the Gothia Cup are truly champions,” Thesleff said, also describing them as ambassadors and a source of pride for both India and Sweden.
The challenge will be significant. The Gothia Cup brings together teams from across the world, creating an international setting where preparation, adaptability and composure can matter as much as raw ability.
The update says the squad was selected after a national qualifying tournament in Gwalior, where athletes from several states competed for places. The chosen players then attended multiple national training camps before travelling to Sweden.
The reported contingent includes 10 athletes and two coaches, with representation from nine states and Union Territories. That spread underlines the wider reach of football programmes for athletes with intellectual disabilities and the work required to build a competitive national team.
“They are aiming for a hat-trick of victories, seeking to win the title for the third time,” Delhi Cabinet Minister Ashish Sood said.
A third title would carry meaning beyond the final result. For the players, it would reward years of training and provide another major international memory. For Indian football, the campaign offers valuable visibility for inclusive sport and the athletes competing at its highest level.
Attention now turns to Gothenburg, where India’s campaign begins on 12 July. The next storyline is clear: can the defending champions handle the pressure and complete a historic treble?
