2026 World Cup Stadiums: Ghosts, Curses and Folklore

A final with a local legend

MetLife Stadium is scheduled to host the World Cup final, placing the sport’s biggest match near the Meadowlands and its long-running Jersey Devil legend. The creature is said in local folklore to have roamed the surrounding forests and swamps for more than two centuries.

There is no evidence linking the Jersey Devil to the stadium. Its presence is cultural rather than factual, a story that may become part of the atmosphere as supporters arrive for the tournament’s defining fixture.

Ghost stories in Mexico

Estadio Azteca has already built a formidable football history, but reports also describe unexplained sounds and movement inside the ground. Accounts attributed to staff and security workers include phantom crowds, dark figures and footsteps in empty tunnels.

Similar stories have been associated with Estadio Guadalajara, where visitors and security personnel have reportedly heard footsteps, distant voices and doors slamming after events. None of these claims has been independently established.

In Monterrey, Estadio BBVA sits beneath Cerro de la Silla, a mountain connected to local tales of strange lights, figures and sounds after dark. Those stories concern the landscape more than the stadium itself, but venues often absorb the legends of their surroundings.

The rumour of a curse

Hard Rock Stadium is scheduled to stage the third-place play-off. A report links the venue’s folklore to construction in 1985, when workers reportedly uncovered Native American remains and artefacts.

Archaeological investigations followed, while some supporters later connected the site with a supposed curse affecting the Miami Dolphins. There is no evidence of anything supernatural, and the idea remains part of fan speculation rather than football fact.

As the tournament approaches, rituals, rumours and local traditions will sit alongside the matches. The next storyline may not be whether these legends are true, but how supporters turn them into part of the 2026 World Cup experience.
