The report says Hernandez helped the Dundee-Crown Chargers win an IHSA Class 3A regional title after a campaign featuring 10 shutouts and a 0.95 goals-against average. Dundee-Crown reportedly finished 16-6-3, with Hernandez earning All-Fox Valley Conference honours and Northwest Herald All-Area first-team recognition.
His performances extended beyond the regular season. Hernandez received all-tournament recognition at the Lake Forest North Shore Shootout, where Dundee-Crown defeated Carmel, Highland Park and Zion-Benton. He also received IHSSCA All-Sectional consideration.
Hernandez’s development has not been entirely straightforward. The report says he joined the varsity as a sophomore, before a quadriceps tear restricted his junior season. Rather than derail his progress, the setback became part of a broader journey that has included four years with Greater Libertyville FC 1974.
He began playing football at four and initially featured as a centre-back before moving into goal at seven. That positional switch now looks central to his future, with coach Rey Vargas describing Hernandez as an organiser whose distribution helped Dundee-Crown launch counter-attacks quickly.
Hernandez reportedly chose NIU for its player-development pathway and proximity to home. He also plans to study finance, giving the next stage of his education a clear balance between football and life beyond it.
Northern Illinois should provide a demanding environment, but Hernandez appears to be arriving with leadership experience, resilience and a goalkeeper’s understanding of responsibility. His next challenge will be earning minutes and adapting to the pace of college football.
The storyline to watch is whether this promising move can become the platform Hernandez needs to turn a professional ambition into a realistic next step.
